Dubai design initiative robotandspark is ready to set the standards for Middle East pop culture at thejamjar with an exhibit focused on…robots!

The art world has recently taken the designer toy explosion seriously with top auction house Christie’s auctioning off designer toys for substantial amounts. thejamjar hosted the Middle East’s first designer toy custom exhibition.

In bringing the exhibition to life, traditional artists, Arabic typographers, branding specialists and other creative’s from various backgrounds was  given a robot-shaped canvas to customize in their own unique way.  Robert Gibbs, the creative brain behind the exhibition felt the need to truly bring  …”urban art to the forefront of Dubai’s already flourishing art scene”, further adding that he wants “the exhibition to be more than just art; I want to provide UAE’s underground art movement with an exhibition that can be truly owned by the UAE. I want to provide a platform for up-and-coming creative’s to showcase their talent, and provide an insight into Middle Eastern pop culture while the rest of the world looks on with interest”.

Participating artists also was invited to submit artwork using the theme “Robots” – a small number of artworks will be selected for display and produced using various mediums – printing on canvas, laser etching on wood, plastic lenticulars etc . The exhibition plans to push boundaries not only in content but also on the techniques used to display the artwork. The aim is to exhibit a collection of one-off premium art pieces that would be at home in luxury apartments or design museums alike.

Participating artists are as follows:

Chor Boogie, Lisa Geuvarra, Rollan Rodriguez, Lewis De Mesa, Eduardo Yap, Paolomaria, Buffi Jashanmal, Renata Giovanoni, Diya Ajit, Hani Reza, Vivek Premachandran, The Tribe, Leo Burnett, Malek Ghorayeb, JWT, Expression, TBWA, Khulood Khoory, Nina Jaitha, Cynthia Wong, James Gibbs, Roula Ghalayini, Bianca Bernstein, Nawal Khoory, Hind Iskander & Talayeh Jenab, Stuart Harris, Darwin Guevarra, Yalda Jafari, Ogilvy One, James Clar, Amritraj Gupta, Joseph Manata, The Laughing Man, amirah t., Tony French, Jalal Abuthina, Graham Tooby, Katarina Premfors, Tariq Dajani, Dave Kennedy, David Taylor Bramley and Hind Mezaina.

The exhibition was a cocktail of art, design, culture, color, music and movement. The work itself was young, fresh, and colorful with the gallery’s clean white spaces providing the perfect balance for the work to reek of funkiness. The opening night punctuated by a killer soundtrack from Underground Procedures’ DJ Dany Neville playing genre diverse, cutting edge tunes from across the globe, while also laying the tracks for a robotandspark mixtape.

As well as displaying the Robots, international photographers from Bareface photographed the finished robots in different scenarios relevant to the piece. These shots formed part of the exhibition displayed alongside the corresponding Robot. Go to www.mynameisrobot.org for more information.
